Larry, Set with a timing light or simple 12 v bulb across coil and use breaker bar , non running before you start it .. on# 1 by looking at rotor and cap wire. or get it idling and use timing light , vacuum Line off, to approx correct idle timing setting ; then Rev to 3500 or so and set max advance to spec , vacuum line off. Never turn arbitrarily , turning 3:8” etc. With 10:1 you can blow hole in piston or worse if you drive it with timing way off by ear etc . firing back would seem to be lighting off with intake valve still open, = way off . But if spun distributor can be also hitting the wrong ( next to # 1) cylinder . So either way needs timing set right . With correct tool . Dropped push rod can do this too or valve spring . . Sometimes hold down clamp makes marks on distributor collar at block you can see where it was positioned for a long time . Advice to check firing order is very good advice . No matter it was driven etc. That caused me to get to own a 78 dodge truck with a new 360 engine , two wires swapped in cap . I did not find it . ( embarrassed to say that) No way I even allowed the possibility that might be true. Ran terribly as you might imagine. But it ran. Drove 1000 miles. So much blow by it blew oil out of dipstick hole , caused by this firing at wrong time A friend noticed it on cap wire sequence after perfect new engine was all pulled apart . For nothing. Guy who assembled it did that . A genius .
