Re: [Chrysler300] John Hertog’s 1961 Dubonette 3 Speed Manual Newport

Hello 300’ly to all!
I distinctly remember John Hertog explaining his restoration of the Dubonnet Metallic ’61 Newport coupe as a means of showing what Chrysler advertising described as getting into a big Chrysler for ’61 for under $3000.  A stripper with a manual transmission for like $2995!  He said it was a chore to drive the notchy manual transmission. He brought it to the 2006 Spring Meet in Asheville for it’s reveal to the 300 Club if I am not mistaken. Rob Kern

I purchased a used ’61 Newport 2DHT with the floor stick in about 1964.  I think it even had rubber floor mats.  It did have power steering.  I thought I had bought a poor-boy’s 300.  It was not fun to drive through the Omaha hills and in rush-hour traffic and it was no 300!.  Soon traded it for a ’63 Newport 4DHT with wonderful TorqueFlite—still the 361, but trimmed out, adequate and a good commuter car-pool car.  Coulda/shoulda had 300’s both times.

Hi To All,

Came across an article on manual tranny Chrysler Corp. cars from 1961-1864.

I swear that the Dubonnet Metallic 1961 Newport was the one restored by John Hertog.

It was a bare bones model that Chrysler brought out to compete in the lower price bracket against lesser expensive GM & Ford’s of the world.

3 speed manual on the floor with no power assists.
