[Chrysler300] Re: 300H - 413 Main Seal leaking

Good time to talk about this topic.
Yes you can change the rear main seal on your engine without removing the engine from the car but you have to lift the engine up enough to be able to  remove the oil pan. So remove the motor mount nut on each mount to be ablt to lift the engine. If I remember correctly, the engine has to come up until the bell housing touches the body! Even then, there's barely enough space to remove the oil pan , oil pan pick up position doesn't help either... and watch your radiator while lifting the engine, fan blades can quickly ruin a good radiator...
I have been fighting a rear main seal leak since last year on a 440 ( non 300 car). We changed the seal and after 50 miles, still leaks too much for my taste. Me and my mechanic here are looking at the replacement seals provided by suppliers( I had a few ordered) and we think the seals are actually inadequate. I'm talking about the rubber version here and not the original rope type.
The rubber type seal provided to us seems to sit too low inside the groove on the aluminum retainer,  we think it barely touches the crankshaft and can't provide a good positive seal there. And to us, it's too easy to place the upper half of the seal, it slides in and out of the upper seal slot too easily.  As a solution, I ordered a billet retainer and seal kit from Mancini Racing and it cured the problem. Their seal, once installed in the aluminum retainer groove, is  visualy a little higher and should make a more positive contact with the crankshaft therefore a better seal.  Also it is more difficult to insert the upper seal portion in the slot, which we think is the way it should be if you want the seal to do it's job!
Now I don't have that severe leak problem with my F,  although it does leak a bit at the rear main seal too  and when the time comes to redo the main seal on the F, it will be with this seal kit from Mancini.
Kit cost is around $75.
Just though I would share this bit of info while on the rear sel subject.

I’m considering replacing the rear crankshaft main seal on my 300H. Some say I have to have the engine removed. Are there any shortcuts?
