Re: [Chrysler300] 383 Build - Piston Install

Hi Matt,

Wisdom suggests that you do not force the pistons into the cylinders. They should slip in with relative ease, but because of the chamfer that might be cut at the top of the cylinder there can be a slight hang-up as on oil ring rail expands just a bit into that space as it slips our to the tool. Still it should not take more than a gentle tap on the piston head to move it beyond that point. Be certain that there is not a ridge or bump of carbon remaining on the cylinder above the old ring travel. If there was a wear ridge above the ring travel you should have already reamed that out and there will not be carbon, but there could be a bur to look for.

As Joe mentioned, the ring grooves in the piston accumulate carbon behind the old worn piston rings and the new unworn rings will be thicker and possibly not fit deeply enough into the ring grooves to be fit into the cylinder. Be certain that all ring grooves are clean.

Another potential problem that I've seen is when using multi-piece oil rings (typically 2 thin rails and an expander) it is possible that the expander has not been adequately seated, that the two ends are overlapped just a bit. That will prevent compression of the ring sufficiently to slip it into the cylinder. If you have done any more than very gentle tapping on the piston you MUST carefully inspect the rings for possible damage before proceeding.

Good luck. seems like you are proceeding with adequate caution.
