Bob, I did my ‘65 sway bar bushings as you described years ago. I drilled out the spot weld with a large bit. I didn’t have spot weld cutters at the time so drilled a little deeper than necessary to release the weld.
Installed the new bushing, clamped it in place and plug welded with my MIG. I was concerned about heat on the new bushing but with a quick weld and a wet cloth it was uneventful. Looks factory and good for another 40 years or so.
Don’t remember where I bought the bushings. If Steele has them, that’s likely where they came from....or possibly Gary Goers.
