RE: [Chrysler300] [Chrysler300] ‘58 dash pad replacement question -

I just received pricing last night from Autoline in Sweden. Current 300C dash in Black is 5800 Swedish crowns, 1500 additional Swedish Crowns for other colors.

5800 Crowns – about $650.00

I bought my C dash pad in 2003 from Just Dashes and it fitted perfectly and still does and has not had any sign of deterioration.  It cost me just around $500 including tax and S&H.  Wish I could say the same about my 392 Hemi that was rebuilt.  Spun 2 bearings at 60 mph and fried the crank on Saturday night April 25th.  Ironically I was playing Saturday Night is for Fighting by Elton John when a new percussion section joined the song….my engine knocking like a skeleton in a metal locker during an earthquake! Engine now being rebuilt at a different engine builder in Norman, OK and will be tested on a dynamometer and have hot adjustment of valves done at same time.  Should have it back around Labor Day for installation. Good thing my dash pad wasn’t a sound insulator or I might have had a rod go through the block!!  LOL.  (T’is only money and time, right?!). 300’ly, Rob Kern

Here is my recollection of my RD Outline purchases.......

I bought the dash pads many years ago.

I think they were $1,000 or a bit more?  Damn; it was years ago.

Reading posts today; I do hope they have NOT shrunk or twisted!

Oy!

Here is my scenario:

1962 300 H - Still waiting to get this car home for assembly!  I think I have a new pad for it in the garage from RD.  And I think it is the correct gold-ish color to match the Saddle Tan H Interior if I recall.  I am picking up the 4 bucket seats tomorrow from the upholsterer, wearing their new Gary Goers covers!  Now I really need to figure out the drivers side Adjuster pieces I am missing that live in between the base of the bucket & the floor.

1962 New Yorker Wagon - I have a new pad from RD for this car.  It arrived Black.  I had the guy repainting the car, also paint the dash to match the Rosewood interior..  It looks really good.  I need to pull that engine & trans next AND then install the dash pad & replace the radio with a 7-button radio I have.

I understood that RD Autoline only made black dashes and that they dyed them to order after they were made. Can you confirm that they are molded in color? I have it easy since I have two black dashes that need to be replaced so easy to match.

I’ve only heard good things about their work. Hopefully they’ll still be doing them when I get around to doing my two ‘60s.. They said to not let them sit around off the car for very long as they will warp due to Chrysler not using a full metal backing on them...

I second RD too . Pricey but worth it , perfect . Covering is right color material through and through from start . Others make one color as inventory and dye it . That is Garbage ..

Hmmm...this thread is great. I’m actually prepared to purchase a dash for my F. Is it fair to say, based on the feedback set forth below,  RD Autoline is preferable?

I sure hope mine (C & D) fit that nice after years in the original shipping boxes.

That is, IF I ever get around to finishing the cars.

I re-read Keith Boonstra's comment and he said, "BTW, I have not heard good results re dash pads from Just Dashes, but I (on my '57) and many others have been very pleased with the pads from RD Autoline." My personal experience with Just Dashes (30 years ago, before internet and easy text and phone connection) for a 1967 Porsche 911 was MISERABLE; it was warped (twisted) and an inch too short.. I sent it back with a detailed sketch of measurements and they grafted in an extension to the fiberglass base, but the graft was so bulky and misplaced that a couple of the fasteners would no longer align. I gave up and had the old dash locally repadded and covered in leather - it actually looked good as new, fit like original and cost a little less than the useless Just Dashes item, which I discarded! Wasted $350 for the dash + double shipping + weeks of delay and frustration. Never again for me!

On the other hand, like several others, I was really thrilled with the dash from RD Autoline for my '57 300C convertible; sent the $770 to Sweden and it arrived in barely three weeks, still looks great six years later and fit well (although the installer cussed for 8 hours straight about how hard it was to get to all the dash mounting points while upside down under the poorly lit dash! Thankfully, did NOT have to remove the windshield.

Noel,

I'll add to the consensus you can do it with windshield installed.. I did it myself on my '58 Windsor with the windshield in. Wasn't too difficult.

Pad was from Just Dashes and I'll echo Keith's comment that their product has good fitment and looks good (and has held up fine over last 10+ years) in case anyone looking to buy a pad.

Went to a large local cruise-in last night, where coincidentally the F took Participants’ Best of Show.
More importantly, I met a new friend who’s just about finished restoring his ‘58 NYer coupe - stunning white over Aztec Turquoise, with its beautiful greenish interior. He bought this car in 1980, at age 25, and put it into storage, where it sat until 2013. He’s ordered a new dash pad from RD Autoline in Sweden, that’s due to arrive next month. A friend of his sent him a photo of my F at another cruise last week, and again last night, so he came over just to see the F.
Question - can he replace the dash pad without removing the windshield? He said the original windshield is pristine, and doesn’t want to remove it, if possible.
We will be staying in touch with each other.
