I often wondered about this too as other designs use the axle gear lube for the wheel bearings by design . And every rear axle made has the same type timken tapered roller bearings supporting the pinion input and side carrier bearings ; so ought to be fine at wheels too . also heavy oil is better lube than any grease . Putting timkens at axle ends is a great design . ( anyone who has struggled with pressed on GM ball bearings knows) ; maybe they were worried axle oil would not get out there fast enough when new ? I believe , from memory , when that inner seal fails —as designed now — it can get into brake shoes / drum somehow ( my experience ) . Runs down backing plate ? Maybe they fail as you describe because in fact they have grease not the good oil as used in the diff timkens . Not sure we know the real why , but critical that the end clearance is correct and FSM followed -how to check - ( push on other side) . There is a section on 300 site about that center thrust pin (s) falling out on sure grips . Not uncommon , can’t set clearance then , too loose . Fooled the guy I bought an early F from ,left by him way loose, resulted in disaster for me . Well known issue to early mopar mechanics in 50’s-60’s .
