Re: {Chrysler 300} E News 51

I remember back in 1960 - 1961 my father was a factory service representative with Chrysler and there were major problems with the swivel seat mechanism.

My father owns an all original, never restored 1960 DeSoto Adventurer he bought in 1961 as a one year old used car. It's got about 41,000 miles on it and still smells like a new car inside. It still has the clear plastic seat covers on from new and has the "automatic" swivel seat option. I'm not sure what the build date is on the car.

I have this feature on my 28,000 mile all original 59 Imperial crown. It does not have the cable actuated function and it was assembled prior to January 1, 1959.

My understanding is that the “automatic” function was immediately recognized as a horrible safety/liability issue and the cars were fitted with the “spring” that provides a bit of assist when the manual handle is depressed on the leading edge of the seat.

Terry and All,

I seem to recall that certain Chrysler Corp. cars had the cable operated automatic swivel seats and others had the manual ones as in the 300F.  My F's swivel seats are manually actuated by  a lever on the side of the seat.

I found the following quote which might have been the reason they stopped the automatic feature.

"It has also been told that the automatic feature on the '60 models was retrofitted with manual controls after the wife of a Chrysler Corp. bigwig was subjected to some embarrassment when the door on her side was suddenly opened by a doorman. I never did see one of the fully automatic models in real life, so I suppose if some slipped past recall and are still in existence, they are rare indeed."

Here’s what’s documented about the swivel seat option in Ross Roy Salesman’s Data Books for each year and model:

1959 Plymouth – Standard on Sport Fury only; extra on Fury 2dr Hardtop & 4dr Hardtop, Belvedere Convertible & Sport Suburban; not available on other models.

1960 Plymouth – extra on Fury Hardtop & Convertible models only. N.A. for others.

 1961 Plymouth – N.A.

1959 Dodge – Extra on Custom Royal and Royal. For Coronet, available on custom trim & Convertible models only, not available on 2dr Sedans. N.A. for Sierra Wagons.

1960 Dodge – Extra on Phoenix, Pioneer and Pioneer Wagon; N.A. for Seneca and Seneca Wagon.

1959 DeSoto – Standard on Adventurer; Extra on Fireflite but N.A. on Wagons; Extra on Firedome but N.A. on 4dr Sedan; Extra on Firesweep with custom or plaid trim, N.A. all others.

1960 DeSoto – Extra on Adventuer and Fireflite.

1959 Chrysler & Imperial – Standard on 300E; Extra on all others except station wagons. Only 6-way power available on Imperial, Crown and LeBaron.

1960 Chrysler & Imperial – “Custom Swivel Bucket Seats” on 300F; Extra on Windsor, Saratoga and New Yorker, N.A. on T&C Wagon; Extra on Imperial Custom (6-way power only), Crown and LeBaron.

1961 Chrysler & Imperial - “Custom Swivel Bucket Seats” on 300G; Extra on Newport Convertible only; N.A. on Windsor; Extra on New Yorker, N.A. on T&C Wagon; Extra on Imperial Custom (6-way power only), Crown and LeBaron.

Hope this provides some insight.  Other opinions are welcomed.

Swivel Seats  Sales literature of the period (1960-ish) seemed to suggest  that , on cars equipped with swivel seats, the seats would swivel out whenever the car's door was opened.   I have owned 3 300Fs, and none of these had this "feature".  Anybody out there have any information  about this swivel seat characteristic?  Terry McTaggart
