Re: {Chrysler 300} C300 question

have to chime in here   I had a 70 black imperial 2 dr coupe , 440, 2.5 single exhaust about late 1971 . Had just gotten rid of new 70 440 challenger rt convert   ( burnt orange)
decided time to “ calm down” . Trouble with local cops, after me , due to challenger. Imperial had black padded roof small rear window , way cool mafia  car .
Anyway coming out of Boston at 2 AM ( i skip preceding part) I get into a mini race with  Porsche , he passes me on inside at rotary ( route2 Cambridge) going like hell. No doubt in similar shape to myself . Sliding on the bumps . Almost lost it. So about a mile further on route 2 a long steep , uphill grade in Belmont we called “ mile hill”
I stand on the 440 uphill (!) it soon indicates 120- 125 , he is downshifting etc can barely stay with Imp I am in front . Over top of hill he goes by me about 140 , but I beat him to top . Just then my car fills  with smoke ! Out of back seat ; exhaust pipe had hole over axle top , it had set the trunk rug on fire! A few minutes wot might do that ! , he sees me slow , pull over , fire in trunk he comes back . I had 2 six packs in back = put out fire . ( awwwright!) Had to buy a new tire too. He is cracking up ,— , I am busy !!

. “ what have you got in this barge ?” 440 . “I  can’t keep up uphill !”
He became a friend , was founder of the Gap , clothing store Harvard square .
So yeah, you need those pads ... !

Those are not access panels.  They are square pads of heat shielding asbestos to keep heat out of the trunk floor.  They are positioned right above the exhaust pipes that run under that part of the trunk.
If they are painted, don't disturb them unless you're wearing the proper mask protection.

The guy painting my car wonders if these access panels are factory – I always assumed they were.
