A while back my wife bought a bunch of old car magazines in an estate sale for one dollar. One of the magazines, called Skinned Knuckles (that’s actually the name of the magazine) featured an article about a 1955 Chrysler concept car that looks very very similar to the 1957 Diablo, the first photo in your Cars Never Seen On The Road attachment. The car featured in the mag was called the Streamline X (see attached), nicknamed "The Gilda" after the 1946 movie of the same name starring Rita Hayworth and some other people. The article goes into detail about the car, originally designed for a turbine engine thought to be the future of automobile propulsion. It mentions a paper penned by Virgil Exner to the SAE, entitled Styling and Aerodynamics, about how fins have a stabilizing effect on cars and how tail fins balance wind forces against the car's center of gravity.
