Al, I would keep calling around to find shops that still work with R-12. I quickly found two near me, on an old time radiator shop, and another is an old school auto repair shop. I would certainly do the vacuum test, and the dryer just because it sat empty so long and they are not expensive. Next is be sure the oil is there in the correct amount. R-12 is available on eBay from many sources. You will need a lot, but a shop that works with R-12 can pump it out and reuse it if you run into any issues. R-12 will only hurt the environment if it leaks out! The cost on converting should be considered against the cost of the R-12. Plus I did a conversion on another car and I am switching back. Doesn't cool as well, and throws a lot more heat into the engine compartment! Funny, just today I got my K out of the garage and back on the ground for a couple of spins through the neighborhood. My car was sitting in garage since 1984.The system looks bone stock. The previous owner, 80 years old but a race driver and a mechanic bought the car in 2018 told me he did the vacuum test and charged the system with R-12. He said the clutch kicked on (holding pressure) but it didn’t blow cold. He forgot to check the heater valve-stuck open and three of the vacuum actuators didn't budge. So today at 84 degrees I pushed the Max Cool button--- and it blew like ice! So R-12 is still available, search for a good price on your own bottle if the shop is going to gouge you. And again, if the R-12 doesn't leak out, our planet will be safe from certain doom! As some of you know I recently purchased a beautiful 1960 300F from Bob M. named Virgil. During restoration in 2003 the factory A/C system was rebuilt and installed in the car. However it was never charged since it was set up for long term storage. I have spoken with a few A/C people here in Texas and get mixed answers. One guy says there is a synthetic substitute for R-12 in which he could charge. Others say it would have to be converted to a R-134 system. One says I would have to change compressor and convert. I want to keep Virgil as original. Any insight to this would be appreciated, since I want to do the correct charge for the car. Thank you for all your help.
