It is disconcerting when I fill up my C and the pump nozzle does not shut off. If it is true that the problem is the filler neck diameter, do you suppose we could make some kind of insert that we could just plug into the filler neck, then pull out the insert when the tank is full to put the gas cap on? The insert could have tangs like the gas cap so the insert would twist on, with the OD of the insert fitting inside the 1957 filler tube, then the insert opening would be the same as the modern-day filler tube. I often fill my tank two or three gallons short so I don’t jeopardize the paint below the filler tube. Remember that they regulated a downsizing of the filler tube opening diameter as well as the pump nozzle when the switch to unleaded gas happened. So I am pretty sure the problem is that there is too large a diameter difference between nozzles today and the filler tube openings of yesterday to allow the two to work together and shut off the nozzle quickly.
