Maybe it varied by when the car was built.  I also had an untouched '65 Sport Fury with a black box.  It was a very early '65 from the Newark plant.

That is my understanding as well. For show cars we might clear them. They are sprayed black when Cardone rebuilds them. Nothing lacquer thinner won't fix.
