The console arm rests on my 300 F are still removed, now in my attic (still under body restoration). The restraining strap looks like Bob described it in his video (youTube). By laying a picture of the actual state of the body restoration, note the color.

--The restraining strap is shorter (as pictured) than on the consoles without the latch. It looks like one would need both hands to raise the lid and grab what you need from inside. I would guess the early consoles had the latch and complaints would remove the latch and add a longer strap to allow the lid stay upright by itself.
