Henry, what you say is very true. A transmission requires an engine in good operating condition in order to shift properly on the road. However a cold start with an engine running even if not running well should still put a transmission into gear. A delay into gear when cold provided the engine is running at sufficient RPM to generate the requisite line pressure is not likely a problem with the engine. More likely are seals that are leaking until they get soft enough to seal when warm. Again my comments are subject to review and correction by Don Verity. The trans expects the engine to be putting out a certain amount of torque at a certain speed and at a certain throttle position (or vacuum level if vacuum controlled). May be your cold engine/choke settings are off if it shifts properly when warm. I don’t expect perfect shifts when cold on an old engine because it is hard to get the choke perfect.
Chrysler 300’s are special but aren’t as unique as some people think. Getting the engine right first applies to most trannys. If the trans and linkages are ok, you may be chasing the wrong problem.

Don Verity is the guy to answer this one, hopefully he will be along soon. In my experience failure to shift cold that abates once at operating temperature is hardened or leaking seals and not an adjustment. Short shifting is generally a sign of maladjustment of the TV rod.
Most transmissions are highly sensitive to TV rod adjustment, a half turn too much or too little will cause big swings in shift timing and quality.

Wanted to pick the brains of those much more knowledgeable than I am :).
Working with my ’62 300 Sport which has: - Rebuilt torque flight. - New shifter cable. - Have adjusted the shifter cable (at the trans) per the shop manual. - Have adjusted all carburetor to transmission linkage specs multiple times per the shop manual.
The problem: - Car does not wish to shift from 1st to 2nd, when cold. It’s almost as though I need to mash the pedal to the floor to get it to shift. (This seems to be that the Transmission Lever being out of adjustment; right?) - But...Once car warms up it shifts perfectly fine.
Are there other adjustments I need to consider? (Like bands perhaps?)
