RE: {Chrysler 300} Question on installing spring clips for nose letters on my 1959 300 E

HiHo Rob: your hood is original. All the undersides of the C-D-E hoods are not that accessible….otherwise, the letters would go on with a speed nut like the rear license plate frame/”300” letters, or a threaded stud like the trunk medallion. I do not recommend making the hole bigger; I think that would just make the clip looser. Instead, try bending the side tangs that hold the clip in the hole (see jpg attached) to make the clip tighter in the hole. You will really have to push the clip in because, as was observed, it looks like you have a thin layer of bondo around the hole. After the clip is in, I recommend putting just a teeny tiny blob of JB Weld on the shaft of the S to make sure you don’t lose this one. By the way, I have a spare S, as shown in the attached and you are welcome to it. it’s a little janky but it is chrome. I am almost positive I got my clips from Goers/Quirey but I cant lay my hands on the catalog to confirm. I am diligently looking for something else right now because I always find stuff like misplaced catalogs when I am looking for something else.

Thanks Ron.

I think that may be the issue...I'll file the sides

of the hole down a bit.

As to photos from below... the lower part of the nose part of the hood

is not accessible...it's wrapped in metal. Maybe my hood

is different from original.

Rob -

The pin goes thru the hole. Then the retainer slides onto the pin on the back side of the hood.

From your photos it appears that you may have a layer of body filler that may impede the pin from sliding fully thru the hole. Please shoot a picture from underneath the hood showing how far the pin protrudes thru the hole.

Thanks,

Ron

Subject: {Chrysler 300} Question on installing spring clips for nose letters on my 1959 300 E

Hello 300 Group

About three months ago after a nice Sunday drive I discovered my LETTER

“S” on the hood nose of my 300 had disappeared.  I suspect it just fell out.

I was able to find a replacement S from the Quigly company. It is

not chromed…but it will do. Then I learned I needed a set of spring clips

to properly attach it.  I was able to get the spring clips…a set of 8!

Now the challenge of how to properly install it? I tried putting it in the hole

and gently tapping the clip. This did not work adequately. Then I tried

attaching it first to the post of the letter and gently tapping that into

the hole. This resulted in the post on the letter bending. Any advice on how

to properly install my new letter.  I did think about using adhesive….

however the proximity to the radiator leads me to believe an adhesive will fail due to the heat.

I will be grateful for some good advice?

Here’s a few photos….

Thanks.

Rob
