Hi James , because LED draw so little , the dimmer will not drop voltage enough to be a useful control . 

I’d stay stock , but these wattage changes are so small I doubt if will damage anything .

FYI, sometimes higher wattage bulbs give the same light ( see mcp or mscp mean spherical candle power ) or lumens . . The higher wattage often  have a thicker wire in filament so run cooler in filament itself and last far longer . But that would give less light so they up wattage a little . Look at rated life or you will find some rated 12.6 v some 14 v . The 14 v are long life bulbs. 

I put led in a car , I removed the blue covers ( cracked anyway ) used amber color .

Did not like it , put stock bulbs back with no hoods . I like it . Your mileage may vary!!!

158 - 3.4w
194 - 3.8w
168 - 4.9w

 

I also noted that there are now LED bulbs that are the same size and shape.

 

Can anyone advise if they have used the higher wattage bulbs without any issues on the plastic diffusers and or if they have tried the LED and the same question on heat and the diffusers?
