Re: {Chrysler 300} 62 Sport 300 - 3 speed manual trans

Kind of related , the pin  syncro trans are all junk imho .
If you shift really fast , the pins shear off their carrier and drop into the mesh = boom .
I can say this for sure —as I had a 57 D500 stick , blew 10 of them ( hey I was young ) , 1-2 shift is impossible . Old man transmissions   . =You Pause on way to 2
Later had 60 318 stick , blew up same way but gears beefier .
I saw 61-62 larger mopar 3 speed in a friends ram 383 plymouth station wagon , he never blew it up, but impossible to shift  fast ( Chevy three speed , a crazy design , was even worse ) . Mopar still had the pins .
T10 4 spd  shifted beautifully , a friend with 60  270 hp 283 corvette 3:70 gears won a lot of races never stepped on cutch in a race . He once broke off  the lever at the roll pin. Trans never blew up .
My cure was Packard 3 speed OD . along with 392 in 57 dodge , after blowing up 2 D500 engines —- gears are twice the size ( width ) of mopar , huge cone syncros . Trusty spark-o - matic  floor conversion , 29$ from JCW ; I broke off shifter too at threads . Ended up with 392 head bolt cut off the head , drilled 8 ball . Glued on . Redrilled links for short throw . B and  B 3800 lb 11” oil truck clutch , velvatouch metallic clutch disc  . THAT held a392 stick !!! On banzai starts ,3:70’
But T 85 3 spd has cone synchros also very good ( in police fords 57 up , T birds, trucks maybe before , behind 312 interceptor ford ( the 312 sound great , but dogs) . Mopar put T 85 in max wedge ( 61 62) as their own was a total dog to shift fast .
Jim Bartuska had a full factory introduction   documentation set about that 61- 62 higher torque mopar 3 spd transmission . We discussed all this , it still had the pins …
Direct report from the summer of 62…

The slant six 3 speed was an A 903. It was a light duty version of the 745. Not fun to find parts for, as Northwest doesn't return calls, and the email is obsolete. There was one guy who new the standard transmissions. He is like 80 something and his wife is sick. I don't even know if he is still there.

I believe the max wedge cars for '62 used Borg Warner T-85 3 speeds. Im not sure if they were used in any other cars.

As Pete mentioned, the A745 was the other transmission available, and yeah, I think it was new for '61. The previous transmission used, and I believe it was also still used for a while after '61.... was the A9xx (cant remember the designation of it, but thought it started out as the A9xx...) I have a '61 Plymouth with a slant 6 and I believe it has the A745. One way to tell the A745 from the earlier trans, as they look very similar, is the top plate on the 745s have a bump, where the earlier transmissions do not and are flat. I plan to swap out the A745 for the later A230 3 speed (I want to keep the three on the tree). The A230 is a fully synchronized trans, where the early transmissions, to include the A745's do not have a synchronized first gear.

Hello,

Please bear with me a minute on this email.

At the barbershop yesterday I saw an LTE from Pete Kaczmarski, Waupun, WI in a Jan 22, Classic Car issue.  Pete was asking for information about the factory 3-spd manual trans in his 413 62 red convert Sport 300.   So I copied the info with the idea I’d track down Pete and try to help him find the information he wanted, which I thought was service manual or other technical info on the trans and other applications where Chrysler used the trans.  And of course secondly, as part of the Club membership committee I felt compelled to mention Club membership to Pete if I was lucky enough to track him down.

Well, the first hit from my ‘google’ for Pete and Waupun, was Pete and with it a phone no.  So over a very pleasant phone call with Pete, I told him I thought there would be many experts in our Club who would be able to direct him to technical info on his transmission, and of course I mentioned the ability to get almost instant answers like that through our Club Server, which is included with club membership.  I’ve copied Pete so you can include him with your responses.   I didn’t try to check anything at the time Pete and I were talking, but I expect the HD 3-spd trans info in the 62 Chrysler Service Manual, would be a very good start if Pete doesn’t have that info, and I thought that was available through our website.

Pete also mentioned he has several cars including a 59 Imperial and he sponsors a large car show (by my WI Northwoods standards) in Waupun in late June.

So I hope Pete gets some helpful info from us.

Thanks,

Carlton

(here in Eagle River, WI we have about 16” snow on the ground and a forecast of -15F Monday night)
