RE: {Chrysler 300} Power Steering Pressure

Hi John,

I am thinking that as well. I did just had the unit apart and cleaned it and put in a new seal on the housing.  I also polished, taking care to screw up the sharp edge of the spool valve, and put it back in when I did the above.

It is possible that the temp steering box I put in had junk in it and it flushed something to the pump. That said, I placed an Edelman inline filter on the return, and I took it apart yesterday and it was not clogged. So, I wonder.

I hate to pull it off again! But I may have to.

The other thought was to take the return hose off and put it in a jug. Then have someone start the car and let the pump push out the fluid as I pour a constant stream into the unit. Thus, purging the entire thing and see of that helps at all.

Thanks for the ideas!  James.

I had same issue on a '68 GTX. In the pump there is a pressure relief valve that can jam because of debris or a burr. If it jams pressure may not build up causing a loss of assist. I would take the pump apart and check that valve. Use fine sand paper to clean to valve bore and valve.

Now that I am running this car, I am having an issue with the power steering pressure.

To recap. A used low milage steering gear. The factory pump which I cleaned and put some new seals in, minus the front seal due to the pulley. New hoses and an inline filter, pump filter out. New belts and adjusted with Bob’s steel tool.

Sometimes when I am at idle and go to move the steering wheel, I have zero assist. I rev the engine and move the steering wheel and after a moment or so it starts to work again.

Anyone ever had a similar issue?

James
