I had the same problem with this proprietary Apple format (High 
Efficiency Image Compression) that Apple surreptitiously applied to all 
photos in the late 2021 time frame, and although there is a program to 
convert HEIC into  .jpg, it's a real PIA and you can only do one image 
at a time.  On your Apple iPhone, go to "settings", "camera",  "formats" 
and you'll see "High Efficiency" (which is HEIC) and "most compatible.  
Select "most compatible" and your iPhone will now take subsequent 
pictures in .jpg format. Unfortunately, I could not find a way to do a 
"batch conversion" from HEIC to .jpg, so I had to retake over a hundred 
photos (several months worth) in the new, more universally recognized 
format.

For viewing HEIC photos sent to me, I use the "IRFANVIEW 64" app 
installed on my PC and select that as my way to open such files.
