Re: {Chrysler 300} Ram 300K project for sale in San Diego

another aspect of all this is one should not mix up ram K and non ram in same bin . An  aura like 4 speed F comes to mind for me about ram K … And $ will too . Non ram 1 4 bbl 300 is not too much different than any 63 64 chrysler unless raced  for handling prowess or something and even then not sure I could tell the difference , except in my psyche. That works fine too . Same as 62-63 sport 300 . Great cars …

But ram K or J is an extremely special low volume  incarnation of what a 300 is all about , like a ram H . The last one . Also arguably the fastest one .

And that would strongly  reflect in my case on what  I might pay or expect it to be worth in the future . But as well pointed out , no one makes money in this except by flipping . That motive or concern leaves out those who love the cars for what they are , no matter what flavor or option  , rather than trying to make $ off them .
I honestly like driving 57 -58 D500 dodges more than say a restored D , as it is so big to park around Boston , and now so valuable  and subject to damage , malicious and other wise . It becomes a special occasion car …

D500 is a more agile C or D to me. D500 converts and Desoto adventurer converts are now near lettercar values , and Desoto even  passing them ( ?325 k a while back)  . Possibly more 300’s survive as those “lesser cars”  were  all junked

My brand new C bumper got tapped and dented the first day I drove my  salmon  C convert .  Upset me 100x as much as if Dart bumper got dented.
Sometime following too close trying to get a look !

Don’t want to be stressed in that way ,there was  no stress on driving 300 F very early when I started , just another cool old car (F) with big engine . Non ram K or sport 300 relieves  a lot of this kind of stress , I get it . reliable simplicity too .

So I have driven  a 67 dart slant GT convert or 67 Barracuda 273 convert to  many meets , restored the Dart  25 years ago ( paid 10k ) , must have 100 k miles . ( they never made a GT slant but I did) Kind of my Noel car . ( And why I so respect what Noel does !— just spectacular ) . Today I fear for safety with Dart , highways crowded with 90 mph trucks

Between those two , I have seen Florida Texas Northern Canada , Maritimes   , Seattle etc .

Thus, to each his own and all that and by no means critical , ( hey i drive a dart!) but i think this value aspect and the mopar actions  toning 300 down (  including very  enlightening torsion  bar discovery)  are intertwined .
300 era was coming to  an end ,,—- after 65 mainly a trim option …
Any 300 before that is very special ..

Car restoration is a *hobby*, where you’re supposed to have fun refurbishing a vintage car. It’s not an investment that’s needs to turn a profit.

I advise people that want to get into this hobby that they need to become an expert on their car. Learn everything you can. Sharpen up your mechanical and body restoration skills. Few, if any, auto mechanics know how to work on 50 or 60 year old cars. And they have little-to-no interest in learning. They are good, however, at vacuuming out your wallet and bank account. And when you get your car back, you’ll be lucky if it’s not in worse shape than when you left it at their shop months ago. Do your own work. It’s the only way to get things done correctly. Farm out as little as possible.

Just my 2¢.

Nick I agree but this is really more about understanding where the value lies in our inherently irrational passion. I would be underwater no matter what but I know now I paid way too much years ago for my H.

I suspect none of our Brutes fall i to that rarified air that can economically justify a full on restoration any Letter car. Still, I too hope someone decides to take it on. For me, once was enough….

If we only did rational things with cars, we'd all be driving Toyota Camrys.

Well,

Considering I purchased the 300K I am working on, non-RAM, that has 95K confirmed miles on it and the sheet metal was the best of any unrestored car I have seen in 15 years…

…and I paid $10K for it this car the one for sale is very overpriced. Just my 2 cents worth.

Reading this I find myself wanting to voice some caution. I bought and H in comparable condition about twelve years ago for $10,000. I have probably spent $60M (or even more), am on my third mechanic and it still isn’t finished! I certain see some of the errors I made that added to the bill but I expect I will still have to spend as much as another $5,000 to have a functional car. Complete money pit.

In contrast, a couple of months ago I bought a stunning very original white K that had lived in AZ. No rust anywhere, great original paint and black leather interior. This car only needed new tires because the ones there (which look great) are over twenty years old.  I paid $17,500 on BAT so this represents a pretty good measure of real “market”.

If someone really wants a project, I personally wouldn’t pay more than $8000 or so for a car in this condition. You will certainly spend at least $15,000 to pull it together. Perhaps less if you do everything yourself but isn’t one’s own time valuable too?

I still hope to drive my H some day and do my best to rationalize the irrational expenditure but it really does make so much more sense to buy one of these cars after idiots like me have wasted so much of their money.

I see he's got it listed for sale online also.  Looks like a good project. Problem as always is not what you pay for it but what you pay to finish it.  Hope it gets saved.

My friend Lee Meyer has decided to sell his 300K Ram car project. I've briefly checked the car out and it's really solid. It is missing the brake booster system as a previous owner was trying to put disc brakes on it. The front end is out of the car so it's not rolling on its own. The pictures here are before it was taken apart. Really a good car to save. I'd do buy it if I had room or bandwidth for it. He's going to send me the VIN later.

Here's his description:

Anyone interested in a legit Ram 300K project? This is a really solid car from arizona, about as rust free as it gets with mint floors and trunk floor. I took it on a trade deal a while ago and i have started to mechanically go through the car it needs some love. The body has decent driver paint, i just wanted to get it back on the road and fix the interior. So it is kindof apart right now, original engine rebuilt, 65 trand rebuilt with new converter and cables, rear axle and brakes rebuilt 3.23 sure grip also rebuilt, newer type axle without flange nuts. Gas tank cleaned with new sender installed. Front suspension and steering apart and cleaned, new joints and bushings installed on arms.  Interior is all out including dash, console has been cleaned and detailed with new tach. The rest of the interior needs attention. Car has all of the short ram equipment as it should. Heater core is new. Carbs are restored. I will sell it all for $15k or i dont mind keeping the drivetrain and selling just the body assembly for much less. Car is in San Diego.
