I accept your canning experience, but the tire world is not that
simple. A Michelin, a BF Goodrich, and a Uniroyal are not
generally made in the same plant. Nor are the Continental and
General or the Goodyear and Dunlop or Cooper or the Bridgestone
and Firestone and their subordinate brand labels, etc.
They are not made in the same molds or with the same raw
materials or to the same QC levels. As an example of this,
Michelin recalled BF Goodrich and Uniroyal tires in the
LT235/85R16 size a few years back and replaced them with Michelins
of the same size for free for nearly a year until they could
identify and correct the problem in manufacture of the BF Goodrich
and Uniroyal tires and get the supply chain refilled.
In the interest of economy, the lesser tires frequently have
subtle differences in carcass (body) design and different raw
materials including tread compounds. And often there are various
sub label models within a single brand at different price /
performance levels (though unfortunately less so in the 14 and 15
inch sizes).
The exception to same plant / materials may be Cooper and its
various "private" brands (before the purchase by Goodyear). Cooper
made a number of very similar tires under different brand names in
the same plant(s) - probably still that way?
Back in the day of most of our cars, there was a "100 level"
Original Equipment line (rayon cord); a "110 level" typically nylon
cord with similar tread, better tread compound, and sometimes deeper
tread; and a True Premium with the longest lasting tread compound
and frequently puncture sealing (BF Goodrich Lifesaver, Firestone
Supreme, General Dual 90, Uniroyal Master) or with inner safety
liner (Goodyear Double Eagle). Then there were at least 2, sometimes
3, "sub-100" levels down to the $10 range that you advertised in
order to bring in customers but you really did not want to sell -
frequently using lesser or even less materials and sometimes with
lesser dimensions before there was much standardization or
tolerances or control of size geometry.
My dad refused to even stock the $10 tires because customers were
never satisfied with the tread life and resistance to damage.
These were analogous to many of the Chinese junk tire brands that
you see online but never in your local tire store. But in the case
of some online brands, you may see the same tread pattern with
different sometimes evolving American sounding brand names but DOT
codes indicating China. In some cases the name changes are to
protect the guilty in case of a complaint or possibly those brands
that have a bad reputation simply change names periodically to
reset their reputation.
Strongly suggest you stay with a name you recognize and a mass
production tire - there are still several in a reasonable price
range - for 14 and 15 inch sizes look at Hankook, Kuhmo, Toyo,
Nexen, Cooper (All those brands except Cooper have OE usage on
some vehicles here). Some are still made in narrow white walls.
Personally I stay away from "Specialty" low production tires and
reproductions except for display purposes - partly due to price,
but also these tend to be made in small batches using older
technology.

cannery. All the cans were the same. The apple sauce itself
was the same. The line would roll along and every couple of
hours the label changed.
In the store they would have different
prices. But I know it was all the same product in the can.
Unless one has the time and inclination to
run everything down it is hard to know if you are paying for a
label or a real difference on just about anything these days….
