Re: {Chrysler 300}

Not only is Don correct , another aspect is people mess with regulators without any understanding of what goes on in there. . don’t open  the cover , ( my advice) and especially don’t  listen to an “ expert” who claims to know how to “adjust “ your problem away  . nothing changes in  there — anymore than rocker arms  change . And mopar knew how to adjust it with specialized instruments Joey expert dues not have .
What does happen all the time is the golden screwdriver messed them up .
On generators   brushes stick in storage or wear  out at very high miles ( over 100k) , and brush springs  rust . Unless obviously burned ( which cannot happen unless regulator was messed with ) an armature never needs “ rewinding”’. The regulator limits current — you  cannot burn up armature .
Bearings go . But easily replaced

The reasons for alternators are three  fold :
Solid state diodes came along in late 50’s allowing 3 phase ac generation with rectifier bridges ( 6 diodes) at very low cost compared to a commutator in a generator . ( look at that ! want to make it ? plus very complicated windings literally 50 soldered  connections and winding taps   ) Alternators cost ? 1/3 of a generator .No machined commutator bars .

second , for various reasons alternators reach full output at 1/2 the rpm of generators ,charge at idle
last an alternator regulator in 1960 has one simple coil ( V regulator) ; generator has 3 , a cutout , a VR and a current regulator ;,all 3  need manufacturing and adjustment .
mfg cost 4 x alternator regulator ?
Bottom line = repair generator and be happy

Don Verity is correct. There is nothing inherently wrong with generators. Don't forget, WWII was won on points, condensers and generators. If you keep the generator clean, with good brushes and bearings, they work great for cars of their era. I have lots of cars with generators and have no problems keeping batteries charged.

The main reason for switching from generators to alternators was the increasing amount of power accessories being added to cars. Generators couldn't keep up, especially at idle. Alternators are simpler and put out more power at lower revs. This doesn't mean generators are bad, they just have their limitations.

Hi Rick,

I don’t know about the electrical superiority of alternators relative to generators, but I have also heard that alternators are better for some reason.  But if switching to an alternator becomes more difficult than rebuilding the generator, I just wanted to give some encouragement that the generators are fairly easily rebuilt, as I understand it.

Dave,

The existing generator would need to be rebuilt or replaced and I have an alternator. I know there are differing opinions but I believe an alternator is preferred. Why would all manufacturers discontinue generators for alternators in the early 60's if they were superior?
