One more trick, use degreaser like Simple Green. Warm water with sponge will do-it. When sanding, use soap and water to remove scratches. After 1000 grit go to 2000 then polish using a very fine plastic polish stick. See example on first photo. After polishing, I re-white the text on reverse side after first removing old white w/ simple green and stiff bristle tooth brush.

The 120 mph 57-58 restored lens is available for $50. The 2nd photo shows a 57-59 reproduced 150 mph lens that I had laser cut, a few available for $50 ea.

On my 57 gauge lenses, they had abrasive cleaning scratches that were so deep that I had to actually start with 1000 paper and work through compounds and scratch removers to get to a final glow. They did come out beautiful as new.

Anyone have a clue how to remove the dried up, petrified and crusty gasket remains on these lenses without scratching or destroying the finish on the lens proper?
