I think it's just a matter of production changes through the production year. Especially on a first year design. My car was owned by one family from 1965-2014 with many of those years being in a barn. The only thing they changed in the interior was the carpet on the floor and console due to rodent damage. I've seen other Fs with or without the ball catch in the arm rests. On Tue, Nov 5, 2024, 8:01 AM Dan Plotkin <dplotkin@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> wrote:Though foggy I recall my conversation with Gary seeming confirmatory that the ball stud or “pin” was the 1960 method and that loose hardware over the years may account for why they are often missing. However the other style I see most often on G’s is as some of you report found on F cars too. Some of this likely happened along the way before you got it. How often do we see 61 or 62 instruments in 60 panels?
Given the disparity between trunk lip drains, emergency brake releases (I have a late car with an early release) and console lid hardware it would appear that Chrysler worked from a pile of parts and maybe didn’t rotate stock.
In the C2 Corvette world (1963-67) we had the mighty benefit of former GM employee John Hinckley now of blessed memory who worked in St. Louis at the Corvette plant. John was able to fill in many of the similar blanks of the arcane for the Corvette community. John later went to Chrysler where he ran the Viper plant.
We need a John Hinckley type who worked on the Chrysler line and can tell us about the lack of rhyme or reason as to parts and method usage during construction.

Our F , also an early May 1960 build, has no evidence of having any history or evidence of a small latch “post” on the lids or a receiver latch on the lower bins. Both bins do have the molded in notches where a latch like that posted could have been installed (which clears up the mystery for me as to “why is this here?”)

Ditto for my F, built 5/5:60. Only my rear armrest cover has the stud/tang. I always assumed one of these armrest bases was swapped out at some point in the F’s past.

Not even all the 1960 cars came with them.
My February 300F had them front and rear. My May 300F only has one in the rear. The armrest bases are molded differently as well.

I know a little about this.
The 1960 lid uses a ball stud secured by nut to the lid which fits into a tang in the base. My car was absent these, and every specialty hardware shop I spoke to said good luck.
I consulted with Gary Goers who said that it might be the hardest part to find for the car! He scrounged one up from a fella in Canada and sent it to me. I sent it to member Peter Kearing's son David who reproduced it from a 3D printer and I sent that to Bob Merritt.
I attach herewith the paperwork on the item.
The 61 lid eliminated the ball stud and receiver for no latch at all.

Subject: {Chrysler 300} 60-62 Console LidHello everyone!
Need some help with identifying a console lid and container. Are the 60-62’s all the same or do they have variations in them? I see from the webpage on the club site there are a number of latch mechanisms for 1960, but wasn’t sure if they were same across that three year span? Also, is the rear the same as the front? Here is the link to photos of the one I have:
Thank you in advance for the help.
