Re: {Chrysler 300} Re: steering pumps

The Saginaw pumps are
Really trouble free.
They almost never leak .
 Still being used today.
I have had one on my
74 Charger sense new.
No leaks no problems.
I had the Thompson/federal pumps
Leake back in the 60s
And 70s when only a few
Years old.

Generally, I do agree with you Don. That said, I think in many instances we are seeing the end of the life of these pumps. The bore it is wearing, the scrapers are wearing, and the springs are getting weak.  Also, the bypass valves are getting old as well.

For many of these pumps the clean and seal may work or may not work. Since this is going to be a daily driver for the next 10 to 20 years…I would like to start with a entirely new pump if I can.

The only thing that ever goes wrong with most of these pumps is they leak. I rebuild them, and never replace the slippers or springs. I doubt they are even available. Dirt is the only thing that will ruin the bypass valve. If it is stuck, you need another pump. I've been rebuilding them for years and never had a problem. The only one I had a problem with long ago was one I bought from a parts store. It almost put me into a guard rail when the bypass valve stuck. I put a used on on and no more problem. I pretty much will not buy anything rebuilt from a parts store.

We used to call these 'Federal pumps' they are still available. Rebuilt are less expensive. I rebuild my own pumps. Kits about $45.

I have to hand it to the eBay sellers. Many advertise that they are selling a “rebuilt” TRW power steering pump.  When pressed and asked if they have replaced the scrappers and springs that all end up saying no. Just seals and pain. They really also never replace the pressure valve.  I love the English language skills of these sellers…

I am thinking of ordering one of the Saginaw pumps from Borgeson and seeing if it will work. I am tired of old so-called rebuilt pumps. For a driver, stock looking is not a concern.
