Re: {Chrysler 300} 1958 Power Steering Gear

Ron, right on — actually I think it was mid/ late 58 on 300’s ?
Got into this big time as some late 58 have 60 style control arms bigger ball joints , larger control arm bushings , the better brake backing  plates and so thicker wheel cylinders . Maybe steering too at same time but personally never got into that
you can get into huge hassles over vendors sending  you 57 stuff for 58 D due to this—  if you have the much better late 58 up 300D . Their parts books are not necessarily wrong either . It is nuanced
I fought this like crazy on a 58 I have, I  kept getting parts all wrong

Add into this moog sells two OD of balljoints one for  new control arms one for replacement ( both need to cut new threads ) replacement is larger OD cannot be put into new control arm . Boy did  I try . So like 8 choices old, new , upper lower all in two sizes
Finally I bought a 58 moog parts book , all 300 D front end parts have a footnote to check car you have, multiple ball joints listed  . (but  no ser #) . That catalog is the only  place I have seen this info  . If you know this , a quick look at how upper control arm adjusts tells the story . If like F cams you have the good stuff . If like 57 ( ? shims) you have essentially Plymouth or 57 parts
Not sure if they had a problem(
I personally think they might (?) have upgraded just the 300D as prototype of upcoming regular  Chrysler upgrades ? dont know)  but 59 all have good stuff   .
All from memory , your mileage may vary
Were the early 58, 57 and 56 (55?) huge co axial  steering boxes the same ?

I believe sometime in ’57, they switched over from coaxial to constant control power steering. Yes, big difference.

Big difference between the 57 and 58.

First a 57 steering gear

And a 58 gear.

I believe the column shaft is different as well.

I have two steering boxes I could sell. They are from a 1957-58 300. I know there is a difference between the 1957 and the 1958 steering box but I don’t know how to tell the difference. I am in Berkeley, California.
