So three or four things to be aware of, especially on 64-66 Imperials ( and letter cars):
-
The ground to each door. Sounds like a non issue right? Wrong. My driver door on my 65 would not work even with a freshly rebuilt motor on it till I clamped a jumper cable from the inner door metal to the frame underneath-
that surface rust can act like an insulator.
-
Also check every and all switch contact- in fact if you carefully disassemble each switch( easy to do) you will see the silver contacts will be crusty and burnt like points in an ignition. A small wire wheel bit on a dremel
buffs these contacts up nicely. Plus you can place a little dielectric grease on pivot points etc when in there and replace any severely burnt parts.
-
Check all wiring to and from switches- i had two pins pull out of the drivers switch plug slightly causing an inoperable condition at one of my back windows.
-
The rubber cushion inside of the driven gear- these swell and may need to be cut down as they tend to bind up in theor bores, like every time.
-
The grease on the regulators, the slides and the motor itself inside the gear housing all cause drag. It gets hard as taffy and is utterly useless when hard. Clean EVERYTHING and recreate with a good white lithium paste grease,
not spray. Lucas makes a nice big tube of this and is readily available on Amazon.
-
A little more rare is to bench test the motors themselves. Sometimes when the switches stick, it will fry the thermal limit breaker inside the motor. More common on the imperial motors actually- ask me how I know. Only way
is to rebuild these- but Topher McGinnis is a rebuilder for all things Mopar motors and can help out.
I suspect the power windows on my '64 Imperial need a freshening as they generally go up and down slowly and the rear quarters occasionally require some assistance (I know this isn't necessarily a Letter Car problem but figured the issue/ailment is found
on our beloved Letter cars as well potential remedies). The passenger quarter window appeared to completely retire yesterday!
I found some helpful materials on the Club website:
https://chrysler300club.com/tech/techlist.html
specifically #40 (Ron Klinczar) and #43 (Jamie Hyde).
Bob Merritt also has many outstanding videos on YouTube but I don't recall seeing anything in depth on removal, break down, and installation...I might have missed it?
I appreciate any/all help, including references and recommendations, Club members can offer. Ideally, I'd like windows that go up and down "crisply."
Thanks,
Kurt
