Here is a report on the progress of my 300 F. I have now replaced the intake manifold gasket as well as the valve cover gaskets, which was the original project. Now I’m trying to get the ideal smoothed out as it is really rough. At first I thought I might have a vacuum leak at the intake or base of the carburetors, but using the carb cleaner trick, I detected no leaks. Then I moved onto the brake booster since the idle seems to get a little worse the longer I sit at a light with my foot on the brake. With the car off for about an hour, I disconnected the vacuum hose to the booster. When I did this, it sucked in air, so it was holding vacuum. I put a vacuum gauge to one of the nipples on the back of the manifold and started the engine. It looks like I’m pulling 7lbs of vacuum? I can’t find the spec for vacuum anywhere in the service manual. Does this seem correct? Where would I check the vacuum from the carburetors? My next step is to check the throttle and transmission linkages to make sure they are set properly. It sounds like a tedious project and I’m not really looking forward to it, but I will mark where everything is set now so at least I can go back to the original in case I make it worse. I ran into an old Chrysler engineer that said it transmission linkage could be mal adjusted, preventing the transmission to downshift properly? Sounds plausible. Wondering if anyone else has experienced what I described. Side note…spring on pass side heat tube is broken. Valves on both sides move freely and while it does smooth out a little when warmed up, it doesn’t make a lot of difference. Also, I replaced the choke pots on both sides (drivers side was rotted through). Courteously, I have developed a nasty exhaust leak either at the manifold to engine or the flange gasket is shot.
