By the book is pretty safe. I would check to see that you are actually getting full throttle when the pedal is floored. That can affect whether you get kick down or not.

Is there a tried and true way to set the throttle lever on a 63 727 ? The service manual says to set it with the lever forward at the stop. With no throttle ( where it is at idle). I did this and it shifts perfectly according to the speed chart in the book. Problem is it won’t kick down. I have read forums that say to adjust it with the accelerator all the way down ( full throttle) and the kick down all the back at the stop. Just can’t get it right that way either. Which is it or is there a trick I’m missing ? My fall back is have the kick down inoperable because it shifts so good and I don’t hot rod it. Not sure what to do. Can’t imagine it could hurt the trans to not kick down, but this is my first Mopar. Thanks for any help!

I'll second Don's comments on full throttle.  Used to be upset that my convertible was  somehow lower performance than my coupe until I finally realized my carbs were not opening up all the way when my pedal was to the carpet.  I was reading some really old (1980's) Brute Force magazines the other day, and reprints of reviews of the F and G both had comments regarding how "imprecise" the whole linkage setup was on the crossrams, and how critical it was to set them up properly if it had been taken apart and put back together for carb rebuilds, valve cover gasket replacement, etc.  Even worn motor mounts slightly changing the position of the engine in the bay can cause issues.
