Did this whole carpet thing on my '68 Barracuda.  My steps are as follows:

1. Take out everything.  (Body plug description below)
2. Clean everything on the floor and anywhere else.
3. Wipe down floor and dry with a hair dryer.  (Wife still loves me over 
that one.)
4. Spray on Sound deadener.  I actually used spray on Undercoating.  It 
seems to work the best.  It provided sound deadener, rust inhibitor, is 
water proof and goes on smoothly.
5. Use pointed bolts, mentioned in another email by a member, to set the 
holes in your carpet.
6. Re-install carpet and trim.

Very simple process and once you get into it, time is very short.  Most time 
spent should be on the cleaning end.  One other note, the body plugs can be 
a problem, but all I did was to find some cans that were the same diameter 
as the holes and put those over the holes while spraying.  These cans should 
be slightly bigger than the holes to allow the plugs to seal properly when 
re-installed.
