Neal, most steering gear are interchangeable. The only difference I heard
was from Rick Ehrenberg is that the A body cars had sleeve or bushing
bearings rather than roller bearings. He went onto to say that in a limited
street use I'd be OK using an A body gear in my 65 Coronet. Steer & Gear
only rebuild manual gear boxes with bushings"cause you can get the desired
feel and torque settings when turning the wheel is by using bushings" and
they get tighter tolerances. So I guess the answer is that you should be
able to use an A body steering gear in your application i.e. lightened front
end . The Pitman arm should interchange, but please make sure that the ball
joint part has free range of motion with out sticking (cause I've been told
they can wear out). Also they are less costly from Steer & Gear than most
other suppliers. I guess you know that you'll have to modify your steering
shaft.

Subject: steering boxes, power to manual
my mopar performance chassis book says that the steering boxes pretty
much interchange between all the Mopar
(A - body/B-Body) cars from about 62-75,A or B body, it doesnt matter.
Hard for me to believe but thats what it says.
So in my 64 Polara AWB project I want to dump the power steering and
stick in a manual box I pulled from my 65 Barracuda that i scrapped
out.
Is this gonna work? What about the pitman arm? Will the pitman arm
coming off the Polaras power steering box work, or do i need to find
the correct pitman arm as well? The barracuda arm certainly wouldnt
be right would it?
thanks for any help,
