1964 Dodge 440 727 Pushbutton

I am trying to replace the parking lock cable on the pushbutton 727
transmission. I have the transmission end removed. That wasn't hard,
once I figured out what the FSM was telling me to do. The dash end...
I'm looking for encouragement. I am trying to remove the pushbutton
control cluster so I can detach the park lock cable. The FSM says to
pull off all of the buttons, except the Neutral button. (In fact, the
Neutral button doesn't pull off, so don't try too hard.) Now the FSM
says to carefully "work the control cluster out" of the support
chassis. Has anyone done this successfully? The hole behind the
Neutral button isn't big enough for it to just slide out. Is it
supposed to be possible to twist the whole thing so that the Neutral
button can find a gap big enough to come out? I'm not having any luck
doing that. It's actually out far enough that I am able to release
the end of the cable by pulling the little hitch pin. But getting the
cable housing out of the support bracket is another matter. If I
could get the thing all the way out, I ought to be able to break it
loose, but I can only get a pair of channel locks on it awkwardly, and
it won't budge.

If anyone has done this, and has any clues to offer, I'm happy to listen!

Thanks...

jt
