A ford explorer would have a later model 8.8 ford rear end. I'd
classify the 8.8 right up there with the GM 10 bolt, meaning boat
anchor. I have a ford e-150 van witht he 8.8 and it just got its side
gears, sipder gears, and cross shaft replaced. Never towed with it,
mainly all hwy miles. Plus its had both axle shaft bearings replaced
with axle saver green bearings.
The info I got on the 9" swap was from Moparts but. The reply stated
that the granada axle was the closest to the A body, and I thought he
had said the spring perches were spot on. You owuld have to come up with
some universal parking brake calbes (not hard, get a good parts guy) get
the correct length driveshaft/Ujoint (also not difficult)
Here is a link to the moparts thread: (took a long time to find it)

There was a thread not too long ago on moparts about using the 8.8 ford
exploder (yes thats not a mis-type) The 8 1/4 is ALOT better rear than
the 8.8 ford in my opinion. Although finding a 8.25 with decent gears
doesnt happen alot, and most exploders are geared a bit steeper. Plus
many had disc brakes, but the parking brake may be a problem.
