coolant leak

Tonight I worked on some of the bugs that showed up after getting the
engine in yesterday. One of the problems was a couple of coolant leaks
from the exhaust header bolts. I was using bolts that were 1 1/2" long.
On a couple of the holes they bottomed out before getting tight. So I
got some shorter bolts and started with the last one on the back of the
left head which had been leaking. I found out that there are only @
1/2" or so of good threads as the shorter one would "strip out" when you
started to get them tight. So I went back to the longer bolt which seems
not to be too long in this case. I slathered it up good with thread
sealant and crossed my fingers. If this continues to leak what are my
options, heli coil or???? And if it needs a heli coil can that be done
with the head on the motor, or does it need to come off?
