Marked torsion bars.
Sometimes a bar can fail from a gouge or mark. When torsion bars first came
out in 1957 I was alive. It was not uncommon to be sitting at the dinner
table and hear a load bang outside only to discover your 57 fury was sitting
lobsided due to a broken torsion bar. It took a few years to discover why
and cure it. It was discovered that many of the premature failures were
caused by stones getting in the back section where the bar mounts and the
working action would actually gouge the bar as the stone rubbed against it.
Eventually it would fail at that end not unlike a piece of glass that breaks
where it is scored. They installed the boots to prevent stones from getting
in there and the problem virtually disappeared. It is wise not to put any
marks on your bars for that reason. It could give trouble a place to start.
I personaly try to avoid it.
