Its always better to pump oil with the oil pump and a rod. Its easy enough
to make one from a spent drive.
I run a drill motor and have the oil sending unit out. When I see the oil
at the threads, I stop and put in a plug. You could put in a gauge if you
want.
I keep the oil pump turning, then have an assistant rotate the motor over a
few times slowly, and leave it parked at TDC on #1.

Subject: Oil priming
Anyone remember Don D's formula for oil priming ? I've got an engine
that I'm about ready to start-up and I've always just used a drill and
prime rod on the pump. I thought I might use Don D's method. I believe
he used a slow gravity feed , but I'm not sure where he fed the oil
into the engine.
