Greetings from Mississippi...Its your radiator and water capacity. That 318 
radiator will not cool a 440. Trust me I know. If it is a custom built 
aluminum, 3 core,  1 1/4 inch cores, cross flow, that bolt into your stock 
radiator support..............you might have a chance. I doubt it.
