Dooner,
The travel from Reverse to Park is longer than the travel between
the rest of the gears (on the manual valve). I don't know that it would
even work using Reverse for Park, not using the Neutral button, having the
Drive Neutral, etc. You'd just have to try it and see, I guess.
One other (albeit pricey) method that I neglected to mention earlier
is to use the Retrotek Speed Smart Shift system - it is basically an
electronically driven linear actuator that is driven by a custom control
unit with switches for buttons. We designed and built a switch-pack that
attaches to the OE pushbutton shifter that actuates the Smart Shift
control
unit. Looks stock from the cabin but is whiz bang from the button unit
down. It requires two separate buttons to engage "Park" but has a host of
other features like indicators, etc.
Read all about it here if you are so inclined...

You can even order F1 style shift paddles if that blows your hair
back. Total expenditure is around 1500 beans... I'll stick with my old
cables and buttons on my budget!
I like your idea of using the Park Lock lever for a battery
disconnect, although I particularly enjoy handing my '64 over to valets at
the casinos then watching the crowd gather as they try to figure out how
to
move it. But I guess anybody trying to steal the car would know how to
shift it!
Come to think of it, it would be simple to install a switch on, say
the "First" button, that would require you to hold the "First" button in
(as
far as it will go with the Park Lock lever engaged) to enable the neutral
start switch so the starter will crank.
Nevermind, forget I mentioned that. Shhhh.

Steven,
I am wondering if the original pushbuttons can be used by just using the
buttons alone, not using the park lever. My thought is to use the reverse
button as park, the neutral button as reverse, the drive button as
neutral,
the second button as overdrive, and the first button as drive. I don't see
any future need for me to drop it down past drive, as my car will be for
cruising and not racing. I even thought about getting the buttons remarked
with the right gear position on it, but I might just keep it as original
so
it would be hard for someone to drive my car unless they knew. I even
thought the park lever could be a battery disconnect switch. So you would
have to raise it up to start the car.
What are your thoughts on that? And if anyone else has any thought,
ring'em
on in please.

Doug,
There are a couple ways to go - Gear Vendors makes a unit that will
attach to a '66-up TorqueFlite and there is always the A-500/518.
The conversion does work with 1 cable, but with slightly increased
button effort - the original pushbutton setup uses a lightweight cable
with the moving parts submerged in nice warm transmission fluid, where
the conversion moves all the moving parts to the outside of the trans.
You can also just use the parking brake and use R-N-D-2-1 without
modifying the button assembly. They drove pushbutton TF's from
'56-'61 and just used the parking brake - no different than a stick
car.

Has anyone tried to put an automatic overdrive into our cars. I'm
considering doing this behind my 318 but would like to keep the
pushbuttons.
I know the button assembly can be modified but does it use 1 cable to
work the trans lever with the buttons/park lever or both.
