I agree.  Not the best thing to do but it will last a long time if done right.  If it has rust holes I will cut it out and install new meta it the hole are not to big.

If the effected area is cleaned good and treated with something like Por 15, Chem prime,  fiberglass will last a long time, most probably ride u on out. Consider too the vehicle is not usually driven in the rain and subject to salt. For larger areas you can use aluminum tape or even duck tape as a backing to apply fiberglass to. I know that some will say that fiberglass shrinks and is a no no. I have never had that issue. You can also use a couple of layers of fiberglass in rusted floors and trunk areas.

Todays body filler is very effective and can be put on an inch deep or more as long as you apply it in layers.

As I said this will generate a lot of comments, but not everyone can afford a body shop to do everything. I know that there is a body shop in your area that will spray a car for you if you have done all the prep work. Harbor freight air tools are cheap. Your labor of love will be more appreciated by you too.
