I've heard of setting your carb.idle mixture
w/vac.gauge, but not timing.

your timing. Timing lights....throw them away! To many other factors to deal
with i.e. worn parts, cams, changes along the way, etc.
Adjust timing with your vacuum gauge. Got my LA318 running
right. Oh course a bit of Mississippi Redneck Expertise did not hurt
either.
