Well here's another chart I found. As you can see even though all the 62-70
B body spring perch widths were the same all the housing widths and drum to
drum measurements were not. Interesting that the 64 Max Wedge cars used the
narrower 62-63 rear end width. I wonder if that has anything to do with the
A990 info you saw.

so by that it looks like keeping your splined axle rear will yield a
narrower setup than changing to another rear ala 66-70.But the splines
drive me crazy. I was reading a book the other day called "extreme
muscle cars" and they were claiming that the a990 cars had narrower
rears than a standard b-body of the time. That is the first time I
have heard that and i am somewhat skeptical. I knew the 71 up b-body
rears were much wider. I picked up a complete e-body 8.75 the other
day for 100 bucks. Too wide, but the price was cheap enough , so i
figured it could be a narrowing candidate. The 8.75 rears are getting
hard to find. The last i saw one in the junk yards was 2007, and i
grabbed that one.
