I think you hit the nail on the head. Rick Ehrenberg did an article a while back about tailoring pump pressure to your taste using selective thickness washers. I'm sure the information is floating about on the web, although Gary probably has the information stashed someplace on here :)
Buddy Jack Opperman has experimented with this with what I believe to be positive results... I know he checks in here on occasion - Jack, any help?
