Most of the scams work something like this: 

they tell you they need an out of the country person to help then access some 
large sum of money that they will "split" with you. All you have to do is 
cash the bogus check for them and send them their share. Well when the check 
comes back to you as bogus, you have already wired them the money. There are 
variations, but all run on the underlying principle.
