header removal

i went to remove the old (bad headers) yesterday and noticed that the 440 heads have all studs in them. all look good and none are stripped exxcept one on the end of the drivers side. are all these studs connected to the water jackets? do i need to do a drain of the water to remove the studs?? i have used a small pipe wrench with bad studs before but I'd like to keep the end studs to help with install. the doug thorley headrs look almost exactually like the old set I'm replacing except there is a 1 piece flange where they bolt to the head and they are not rusty yet.there also appears to be way more clearance for the number 5 plug that cursed me on the last set. I got everything off the sides and out of the way for removal, but before i do, do i need to remove the fan shroud and rad to lift the engine to avoid hitting it with the fan when lifting it up to squeeze in the headers. i really don't want to have to replace those... any other tips would be much appreciated..
