Thanks for the quick and very helpful suggestion. It happens to be that my parking brake cable is not connected(only recently purchased car, trying to fix one thing at a time). This would seem to be the problem and will check it tomorrow. Thanks again, this web ring rules.

Derek,
I'd check the adjustment on the Park cable, sounds like you are
fighting the lockout feature inside the shifter box....does the park lever feel like
it is all the way up, or does it feel like something is holding it back (if
it does, that would be the cable adjustment) Only other possibility might be
the mechanism is perhaps in need of lube, spray lithium works pretty good. Good
