seems as someone not to long ago, got carried away, and bent an axle flange 
while removing the studs,,,,,,,,,,,,use the hammer, but remember what you are 
trying to accomplish,,,,,,,,,,,,,I have been changing them that way for over 40 
yrs, and have never damaged an axle or a flange
