I think you will find that your lugs are swaged at the base near the flange, 
that is the problem with driving them out. "Any tricks?" Well, there is the 
right tool for the job. I have never seen it, but have heard it described as a 
hollow cutting tool which fits over the stud and cuts away the flange. 

I think you are in for axle removal. Then you have a choice, either of which 
may bend the flange. Hacksaw off the stud, then grind the remainder of the 
stud below the level of the swaged flange. This may present a difficulty with 
properly installing and swaging new studs. After that try to drive them through 
with a drift and a BFH. The alternative is to grind off the head of the stud 
from the rear, then try to drive them out with the drift and BFH. Simply 
pounding from the front will drive the swaging into the axle flange, this will 
probably enlarge the hole.

Or, switch to a '65 axle.
