There never was nor will there ever be a better shifter than the pushbuttons for racing. 
Impossible to miss, leaves the right hand free for steering and extremely fast. I have run several cars with the pushbutton shifter including a 6cyl altered. Excellant set up.
As for updating your U joint to a slip joint, Why? You will never break the old style 62 to 64 joint. The Lord knows I have tried.
Dvorak told me while I was building the car not to worry about it as he used one for several years and he was right. I works just fine. 
Manual valvebodys should only be used in race only vehicles as they have no braking function when slowing down. I used a stock valve body for a long time and just recently put a fairbanks shift kit in it. Actually it was fine stock although it shifts real fast and hard now.
