Bringing up the subject of compression, you mentioned 11:1 static 
compression with flattop pistons and max wedge heads.  The 286 max wedge 
heads have nominal 87 CC partially open chambers (mine checked out from 87 
to 87.5 CC per chamber on heads that had never been milled), a somewhat 
larger chamber than the standard big block closed chamber heads in the 
pre-906 days.  I think the '63 and '64 have at least that big and possibly 
slightly larger. With flattop pistons and zero deck, I think that would work 
out to no more than 10:1 and probably a bit less.  I had Ross make a set of 
pistons for me which I requested that they take my head and block dimensions 
and give me a true 10.5:1 static compression; those pistons came with pretty 
substantial domes.  So to whatever extent the static compression ratio 
contributes to the power, it may not be up where it needs to be.  The way I 
understand the interaction between cam and static compression ratio, just 
from what I've read, the "bigger" the cam, the more static compression ratio 
you need to get the cranking compression up to make good power.
